Kristin’s life is perfect, as far as she’s concerned. She’s dating one of the hottest boys in school, she’s up for Homecoming Queen, and she has a track scholarship the college of her choice. When she and her boyfriend have sex for the first time, it’s too painful for her to bear. She knows something is wrong, but she’s not sure what. The news she receives at her doctor visit completely turns her world on end: Kristin is intersex. Suddenly, Kristin is dealing with huge decisions that could change her life. Does this mean she’s not really a girl? Should she tell her boyfriend immediately? Should she have surgery? What if someone finds out?
Oh, the feels! Seriously, I felt the full range while listening to this audiobook. Most of them were heartbreaking, but there were also some hopeful, happy moments. I couldn’t imagine how I would have felt if I had gone through this as a teen. As rare as it is to be intersex, it is a reality. I think books like this are so important because they’re more than a story. They’re a vehicle for teaching people about things they may never have known or understood. I knew so little about the experience of being intersex before I read this book. I certainly didn’t learn everything from this book, but it’s a wonderful starting place. It’s also just a great story. There’s no sacrifice for the sake of information. It’s naturally told and incredibly moving. I highly recommend this to everyone because I think it’s important enough.
I had already bought this for the library because it was recommended by one of my librarian friends. I’ve actually already recommended it to a student who started reading it immediately after checking it out. I personally listened to the audio, which was pretty good if that’s your reading preference.
