An Extraordinary Union

As soon as I heard about this on an episode of Get Booked, I went home and downloaded the first book. It sounded right up my alley. Turns out it was wonderful and I now want to read everything by Alyssa Cole

Alyssa Cole flawlessly pulls off a thrilling and original romance set during the Civil War.

Elle, a former slave, makes a return to the South as a spy for the Union. She poses as a mute slave in an influential confederate household in Virginia. There, she meets Malcolm McCall a detective for Pinkerton’s Secret Service posing a confederate soldier. At first, they are each unaware of the other’s subterfuge. Eventually, their intelligence brings them together and they begin working together to bring down the Confederacy. The one thing they don’t count on is falling in love.

Somehow, Cole manages to weave together the period during the Civil War with an exciting spy thriller and a lovely romance. Imagining a romance between a white man and a black woman during the time of slavery is difficult, but Cole writes it convincingly without shying away from all the very real issues such a couple would face. The power dynamics between Elle and Malcolm are frankly addressed. It makes for a strong and compelling romance. The intrigue and espionage keep the pace moving. It’s perfectly tempered with sweet and spicy moments between Elle and Malcolm.

This one got me out of a reading period full of uninspiring books, so I definitely recommend it to romance lovers. I can’t wait to read the second book in the series.
