When Dimple Met Rishi is a fun, sweet romantic contemporary from a fresh, diverse voice in YA Fiction.
When Dimple and Rishi’s parents set up an arranged marriage, Rishi is excited by the prospect. His parents’ marriage was arranged and he’s always respected and loved their relationship. Dimple, however, doesn’t feel ready to focus on marriage. She’s much more interested in her college education and the summer coding program she wants to attend in San Francisco. When she and Rishi are paired to develop an app together at the program, they’re both surprised by where it takes them.
Sandhya Menon pulls together an adorable teen romance that manages be an easy, quick read while covering complex issues. It flowed nicely and, though I listened to the audio, I found I got through it pretty quickly. I was invested in the characters and eager to see how things would work out for them. The romance between Dimple and Rishi is very sweet and gives the novel a light-hearted feel. At the same time, the book covers several more complex issues: women in STEM, feminism, misogyny, cultural traditions, sexual agency. They’re not huge moments in the book, but I felt they were an important part of what made the book so great. Dimple was spirited and independent. Rishi was sweet and respectful. It would be difficult not to love them. It was also lovely to read a teen romance between people of color and I can’t wait for more by Menon.
The audio performance was fantastic. The performances of the characters are great, though I always prefer the female narrations because some of the voices men make for women are weird. It’s particularly great if you need help with some pronunciation in the book. I can get distracted trying to figure that out in print, so the audio helped with all that.
I immediately bought this one for my library. My romance genre circulates really well and I knew this one would get plenty of attention. It’s perfect if you love light-hearted romance and especially if you’re interested in reading books with more diverse characters or by diverse authors.
